The mass contact programme, titled "Ek Bharat Vijayi Bharat", coincides with the 50th foundation year of Vivekanand Rock Memorial in Kanyakumari and will be launched on Sunday.

Involving around 20,000 workers of around 1,005 units of Vivekanand Kendra across the country, the programme will get underway with a meeting with President Ram Nath Kovind on Sunday. Thereafter, a team will call on Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

All state teams of Vivekananda Kendra would contact the governors and chief ministers of all states and a sizeable number of people from all segments of society with the messages of Swami Vivekanand, said D Bhanudas, General Secretary of Vivekanand Kendra.

The programme will also focus on making people aware of the inspiring story of Vivekanand Rock Memorial and the activities of Vivekanand Kendra.

The memorial stands on a mid-sea rock off the Kanyakumari shore where Swami Vivekananda mediated in December 1892 and decided to restore the glory of Bharta, Bhanudas said.

The rock is turning 50. The famous Vivekananda Rock Memorial at Kanyakumari, the southern tip of India, commemorates the spot where Swami Vivekananda meditated from December 25 to 27, 1892, and discovered the mission of his life and decided to dedicate his life towards restoring the glory of Bharat. The rock memorial was inaugurated on September 2, 1970.

Vivekananda Kendra in Kanyakumari will launch a year-long sampark (contact) programme across the country, starting September 2, to remind Indians of Swami Vivekananda's ideals and what the memorial stands for. The memorial was commissioned in the centenary year of the Swami, 1963, and there are many beautiful stories attached with it. Nandita Bhide of the Vivekananda Kendra said that it is the only memorial in the country for which all the 323 Members of Parliament (at that time the Parliament strength) made an appeal for its construction, irrespective of their political affiliations. 

“The central government contributed Rs 15 lakhs for the memorial and every state government, irrespective of the party ruling it, contributed Rs one lakh each. Also, one per cent of the adult population then contributed a token sum of one rupee each. Thus, the memorial is in true sense a national memorial,'' Bhide said.

In fact, the inauguration of the memorial was spread over two months. “In those days, Kanyakumari was not a very developed place, and could not host a big function. Since every state had contributed to its making, each state held a separate inauguration function, there was one event every week,'' said Bhide.

The sampark programme that the kendra will launch will be a person-to-person contact, starting with President Ramnath Kovind. “We will reach out to as many people as we can, the target is a minimum of 30 lakh, since that was the number involved in the memorial initially. Every state will establish sampark with the governor,'' said Bhide. They plan one grant event on September 2, 2020, the venue for which is not yet decided.

Bhide noted that the Kendra was not meant to be just a rock edifice, but a vibrant institution. The Vivekananda Kendra, thus, has 1,005 centres across India today, involved in a number of spheres like education, environment, rural development, social work, cultural activities and even strategic and policy planning. “We started schools in such remote areas that there were no roads or railways. In one place, children came to school on an elephant,'' recalled Bhide, adding that there are now schools from Arunachal to Andaman to Anantanag.

कन्याकुमारी में हिन्द महासागर के एक टापू पर स्थित स्वामी विवेकानंद शिला स्मारक के स्वर्ण जयंती वर्ष आरंभ होने के अवसर पर सोमवार को राष्ट्रपति राम नाथ कोविंद विवेकानंद केन्द्र के 'एक भारत -विजयी भारत' संपर्क अभियान की शुरुआत करेंगे। विवेकानंद केन्द्र के अखिल भारतीय उपाध्यक्ष ए. बालकृष्णन और सुश्री निवेदिता भिडे ने यहां संवाददाताओं को बताया कि एक भारत विजयी भारत संपर्क अभियान में विवेकानंद केन्द्र से जुड़े 20 हजार से अधिक कार्यकतार् देश के एक हजार से अधिक स्थानों पर समाज के अलग-अलग वगोर्ं के 30 लाख से अधिक लोगों से संपर्क करेंगे और उन्हें स्वामी विवेकानंद का संदेश देने के साथ ही समाज के कल्याण एवं संवर्द्धन के लिए योगदान देने के लिए प्रेरित करेंगे।

सुश्री भिडे ने बताया कि दो सितंबर 1970 को विवेकानंद शिला स्मारक बन कर पूरा हुआ था। इस वर्ष दो सितंबर को उसका 50वां वर्ष आरंभ हो रहा है। इस स्वर्णजयंती वर्ष के पहले दिन राष्ट्रपति रामनाथ कोविंद से भेंट करेंगे। उन्हें स्वामी विवेकानंद शिला स्मारक पर एक पुस्तिका की प्रथम प्रति भेंट करेंगे, शिला स्मारक का चित्र देंगे और उनका मार्गदर्शन प्राप्त करेंगे। उन्होंने कहा कि इसके बाद उप-राष्ट्रपति एम वेंकैया नायडू और प्रधानमंत्री नरेन्द्र मोदी से भेंट करेंगे। उन्होंने कहा कि साल भर तक चलने वाले इस संपर्क अभियान के दौरान समापन कार्यक्रम की योजना तैयार की जाएगी। इस मौके पर नयी दिल्ली अथवा कन्याकुमारी में वृहद कार्यक्रम आयोजित किया जाएगा। श्री मोदी भी समापन कार्यक्रम में शिरकत करेंगे।

उन्होंने विवेकानंद शिला स्मारक की पृष्ठभूमि की चर्चा करते हुए कहा कि स्वामी विवेकानंद भारत भ्रमण के बाद इस स्थान पर एक अज्ञात संन्यासी के रूप में आये थे और 25, 26 और 27 दिसंबर तक तीन रात, तीन दिन ध्यान लगाकर जीवन के ध्येय को प्राप्त किया था। इस स्मारक का निर्माण 1965 से 1970 के बीच हुआ। देश के 323 सांसदों के सामूहिक ज्ञापन पर देश की एक प्रतिशत आबादी के दान में मिले 85 लाख रुपए, केन्द्र सरकार के 15 लाख रुपए एवं राज्यों के एक एक लाख रुपए के योगदान से एक करोड़ 30 लाख रुपए में यह स्मारक बना था। इसके उद्घाटन का कार्यक्रम दो माह तक चला था। स्मारक के स्थापत्य में अजंता, ऐलाेरा, पल्लव, चोल, बेलूर मठ आदि अनेक स्थानों की अनेक अद्वितीय शिल्पकृतियों का समावेश है।

The 50th anniversary of the Vivekananda Rock Memorial, Kanyakumari, is going to be celebrated in a big way here. The Baripada unit of the Vivekananda Kendra has already begun elaborate preparations for the same.

With a view to involve the masses, the Kendra here has formed many “sampark tolis” (contact groups), which are to contact different sections of the society.

 Different contact group leaders have been entrusted with the task of approaching and involving people from different walks of life, such as lawyers, litterateurs, businessmen, bankers, doctors, engineers, lecturers and public representatives.

The contact groups will be carrying to the leading figures of the different sections of the society the message, ideals and teachings of Swami Vivekananda.

As a part of the 50th anniversary celebrations, a series of meetings have also been already held here at the local Vivekananda Kendra Karyalaya. The latest meeting was held here on Tuesday evening, which was presided over by Kendra Mayurbhanj Pramukh Anil Kar and addressed by Vivekananda Kendra national joint general secretary Praveen Davolkar.

Davolkar, in the meeting, dwelt on the significance of Vivekananda Rock Memorial and Vivekananda Kendra’s contribution to nation-building in the last 50 years.

He spoke on the importance of Vivekananda’s call for ‘Tyaga’ (renunciation) and ‘Seva’ (service) in order to build a morally and spiritually strong and vibrant India.
